Playground Changes

We will be implementing organized games on the playground this week. Each grade level will be assigned to a particular area on the playground which will help share the playground space that we do have. Students will also be asked to participate in their area, and play with students in their grade level. Students in the past have all used the entire playground at the same time, which made it crowded. Assigning areas for each grade level will help with supervision and behaviors. We do believe that these procedures will help utilize our playground effectively. It will take everyone time to adjust to the new procedures, but be very much worth the effort.

J.T. Enterprises

The Hutchinson Magnet School Parent/Teacher Organization will be kicking off a fund raiser on Tuesday, March 4th. An assembly at 2:15 will be held at school to explain how J. T. Enterprises will help our school make money for future endeavors. The money raised by our local parent organization will be used for the students and we always appreciate it. You should be receiving more information home from your student after the informational assembly.

Spring Break!!

Spring break is early this year the week of March 10 through 14. There will be no school that week for all USD 308. Classes will resume on Monday, March 17th. NO SCHOOL ON MARCH 21

Students will not have school on Friday, March 21st. Please mark your calendar and remember that students will have this Friday off.

Family Math Fun Night Success

Everyone attending Math Night on February 28th enjoyed the activities very much. Students brought their parents and grandparents for math fun and prizes. Every student participated in math games had their ticket punched when they finished an activity. They then turned in the ticket for a prize. Other prize drawings were held throughout the evening. In order to support HMSA’s Character Education Program, a prosocial skills program called “Skillstreaming” will be used in the classroom, small groups, and individually to teach students social skills. The students will be taught skill steps to use in developing different types of social skills. These skills are grouped into five categories: Classroom Skills, Friendship-Making Skills, Dealing with Feelings, Alternatives to Aggression, and Dealing with Stress.

Students can earn extra eagles by filling out classroom forms telling the skills steps they used and in what situation they used them. In addition, some students may come home with a skill card. Dear Parent/Guardian,

At Hutchinson Magnet School at Allen, we are very proud of our teachers and are giving your child a high-quality education. As a Title I school, we must meet federal rules related to teacher qualifications as defined in No Child Left Behind. These rules allow you to learn more about your child’s teachers’ training and credentials. We are happy to provide this information to you. At any time, you may ask:

*Whether the teacher met state qualifications and certification requirements for the grade level and subject he/she is teaching,

*Whether the teacher received an emergency or conditional certificate through which state qualifications were waived, and

*What undergraduate or graduate degrees the teacher holds, including graduate certificates and additional degrees, and major(s) or area(s) of concentration.

You may also ask whether your child receives help from a paraprofessional. If your child receives this assistance, we can provide you with information about the paraprofessional’s qualifications.

Our staff is committed to helping your child develop the academic knowledge and critical thinking he/she needs to succeed in school and beyond. That commitment includes making sure that all of our teachers and paraprofessionals are highly skilled.

If you have any questions about your child’s assignment to a teacher or paraprofessional, please contact me at 620-665-4600.

Sincerely,

Stan Ploutz

Picking up Students after School should be Safe
The new year is exciting for everyone, but is still important to be safe at school. One thing parents can help us with is arrival and dismissal time. This is why we are putting this important reminder in the newsletter once again. Students are dismissed each day from HMS Allen at 3:30 p.m. During this time, there are buses picking up students, students crossing the street walking home, and parents picking up their children. School dismissal is a very busy time on 10th and 11th street for our school. Students who are being picked up should walk to their parent’s car which is parked along the curb correctly. Please don’t pick up your child from the street by the buses. Students are running out into the street to be picked up frequently and this is a major traffic hazard and not the safe way to pick up students. They are exposed to drivers who may not see them. This includes our bus drivers. We will appreciate your help in this matter.

The Holidays are coming and so is the Flu!

While we like to share our time and talents with family during Holidays, we don’t appreciate it when the sharing makes us ill. The season of sharing is upon us and that includes upper respiratory illnesses such as colds, but mainly Influenza, or “the flu.”
In general, the flu is worse than the common cold, and symptoms such as fever, body aches, extreme tiredness, and dry cough are more common and intense. Colds are usually milder than the flu. People with colds are more likely to have a runny or stuffy nose. Colds generally do not result in serious health problems, such as pneumonia, bacterial infections, or hospitalizations.
The flu is most severe in younger children and the elderly. People of any age who have a long-term condition like heart or lung disease, asthma, diabetes, a weakened immune system, etc can become very ill if exposed to the flu. Vaccinating members of the household and anyone with close contact can help decrease risk of getting the flu. Local clinics have reported a good supply of influenza vaccine, so make that appointment today if you haven’t already done so. And the really good news is that, the flu vaccine is available two ways: 1.) Flu Mist (live attenuated viruses) is a nasal spray or 2.) Inject able Flu Vaccine (inactivated viruses) administrated by injection into a muscle. Check with your Health Care Provider to determine what is best for you.
Flu vaccine is the main tool used to protect people from influenza. A number of studies have shown that the flu vaccine works, but how well the vaccine works can change from year to year and vary among different groups of people.
Vaccine effectiveness is not 100%, and some people can still get the flu, so it’s important to prevent disease transmission by coughing and sneezing in your sleeve, washing your hands often, and staying home when you’re ill.
