My child has had a fever. When can they return to school?

Kansas Dept of Health and Environment recommends students be sent home if temperature is 99.6 or above and student has headache, sore throat, nausea, coughing and sneezing or other symptoms. A student with a temperature of 100.4 or above should be sent home even when there are no other symptoms. Student should remain home until temperature has been normal for 24 hours.

My child has had chicken pox (Varicella). When can they return to school?

A child is contagious from 1-2 days before they break out until 5 days after rash begins. They may return on the 6th day. For more information on Varicella and other diseases- http://www.kdheks.gov/epi/download/classroom_handbook.pdf

Tell me about Head Lice

Head Lice continues to be a source of frustration for all. Head lice are small bugs that live on the human head (they do NOT live on animals). Head lice live on a small amount of blood and the bites cause itching. Head lice do not transmit diseases. They love clean, dry hair and are not an indicator of personal hygiene. Kansas has a “no nit” policy which means all nits (egg sacks) and bugs must be removed from the head.
Routine screening in the school setting has NOT shown to be effective in controlling head lice. For more information:
