November 15, 2007
Parents, teachers and students enjoyed the third annual “Read-N-Feed Night” at Faris combined with the quarterly business meeting.
Principal’s Report:
Ms. Neighbors presented a banner for the “Building Standard of Excellence in Reading”. She expressed an expectation to achieve the same award in reading and math this year. She also mentioned the 3rd graders last year scored the standard of excellence in reading. Faris also received two Challenge Awards for last year’s sixth graders in math and last year’s third graders in reading. There was only one other school in Hutchinson that received two of these awards. Ms. Neighbors expressed her thanks to the parents for their involvement in obtaining these awards.
Fundraiser Report:
Erin McFarland reported $270 has been collected so far this year from the Papa John’s monthly fundraiser. The last school fundraiser was the most successful fundraiser to date with a profit of nearly $5000. Mrs. McFarland expressed great thanks to the parents for the prompt pick up of the items.
Treasurer’s Report:
Shanan Stewart reported a balance of $8,856.27 in the PTO account after the fundraiser and the student’s “Dream Big” t-shirts were paid for as well as the security system on the front door.
Old Business:

Faris PTO Minutes
Aug 23, 2007
Erin McFarland called the meeting to order by introducing the PTO Board:
President & Fundraising – Erin McFarland
Vice President – Roxanna Cox
Treasurer – Shanan Stewart
Secretary – Kathy Addis
Treasurer Report:
Shannon Stewart reported that PTO has a balance of $8,376.74.
Fundraiser Report:
Erin McFarland reminded all in attendance that Papa John’s is once again sponsoring the monthly fundraiser on the first Thursday of every month. 20% of all phone and walk in orders and 25% of all online orders will go to Faris. Papa John’s donated 10 coupons for a free pizza that were raffled off during the meeting.
Erin also informed those present that Lori’s Kitchen will be the company sponsoring the fundraiser starting in October. Samples and brochures will be available during the upcoming parent/teacher conferences.
New Business:
Sandra Horning, one of the art teachers for the district elementary schools, gave a presentation introducing everyone to the special art project for Faris. She explained the process for the four stained glass windows that will be facing the courtyard.
Erin McFarland mentioned that she had been approached by some of the staff for the need for an ice maker in the school. She said that someone from the district must first approve a location for it before anything can be installed. Discussion arose about leasing verses buying the machine outright. The benefit of leasing is that the company provides service and maintenance, but requires a monthly fee of approximately $70. It was unknown at the time of the meeting if the purchasing contract includes service and maintenance as well.
The machine would be used primarily for the staff and special events/field trips. Josie Thompson made a motion to pursue investigating the purchasing or leasing of an ice machine. Sarah Nelson seconded and the motion carried.
Ms. Neighbors explained the “DREAM BIG” theme for the 2007-08 school year. She asked if PTO would be interested in purchasing yellow ‘Dream Big’ t-shirts for all the students to be worn on Fridays. The shirts would stay at Faris and would be laundered there as well. It was questioned if there were already laundry facilities to accomplish this task. Ms. Neighbors explained there is already a washer and dryer available. The cost is approximately $1,400 ($5.50/shirt x 227 students). Margarita Zimmerman made a motion that PTO purchase the shirts and Andy Addis seconded. The motion carried and Ms. Neighbors concluded this discussion by again encouraging everyone to order Papa John’s pizza on the first Thursday of every month to help pay for the annual DVD yearbook.
Old Business:
Erin McFarland mentioned that the new security system that was purchased by PTO last school year will be installed soon.
She also reminded everyone that the decision was made by PTO last school year that PTO would provide $10/student for field trips.
Ms. Neighbors concluded the meeting by explaining there is a required parental involvement component for Title I Schools. Consequently, PTO will meet during these already scheduled ‘family times’ in order to encourage maximum participation.
These are the minutes as recorded and respectfully submitted Kathy Addis.

Erin McFarland called the meeting to order.
Treasurer’s Report:
Shanan Stewart reported that there is currently $10,438.07 in the PTO account.

A letter with those dates and the left over coupon sheets will be sent home with students the last week of school.
Old Business:
The tabled item from the April meeting was discussed about the PTO helping out the teachers in the classrooms using the money that the PTO has raised. We discussed how much the buses are to transport students on field trips. Ms. Neighbors said that it figures down to $10.00 per child. Roxanna Cox made a motion that the PTO provide the $10.00 per student for busing on field trips for the next school year. Donna Thiessen seconded the motion. The motion carried.
New Business:

Mark McFarland made a motion to evaluate Laurie’s Kitchen and some other mix type vendors. Shanan Stewart seconded the motion. The motion carried. Ms. Neighbors suggested that we go ahead and order the free sample kit and have samples for our August meeting.
The PTO will have a table set up at enrollment on August 2 from 8:00 am – 1:00 pm and 4:00 pm – 7:00 pm. Erin McFarland will make some phone calls to try to get volunteers to set at the table.
The August PTO meeting will be on August 23 at 6:30 pm. It was decided that we have grilled hamburgers and chips. We will also have samples of our fall fundraiser for all parents to taste.
Erin McFarland brought up a request from Mrs. Suhler about the PTO paying for the safety patrol end-of-the-year party. Shanan Stewart stated that Mrs. Suhler still had some money in her patrol account so we had discussion about PTO paying the balance of the party. Denise Neighbors made a motion to have the PTO pay the balance of the safety patrol party. Ms. Shea seconded the motion. The motion carried.

Fundraiser Report:
Erin McFarland raised the question of if we would like to continue the Papa John’s Night throughout the summer. Kathy Addis made the motion to continue and Shannon Stewart seconded. The vote was unanimous. Erin also mentioned there will be one more t-shirt order going in for this year.
Shannon Stewart asked if there was something PTO would like to do for the student who raised the most from the last fundraiser. Due to the rules of the fundraising company, the student did not even receive all of the prizes they offered. Mrs. Farley motioned to give $25 in books however applicable (school store or through Scholastic). The choice would be up to the student. Shannon Stewart seconded, the motion passed unanimously
New Business:
Ms. Neighbors brought up the topic of having only quarterly meetings. The reason for this is that there have been so few members and it is the same ones that attend every month. An advantage is that parents may not feel so overwhelmed if they don’t have to commit to once every month, but every three months. Mr. Graves suggested making the model for PTO be as family activity, food and a meeting in the middle. This is how the previous meetings have gone with Family Math Night, RIF Night, etc. Ms. Neighbors mentioned that it is not only Faris that is dealing with this issue, other schools are as well. The goal is to make PTO a “big deal” and use the money allotted for family involvement to do so if necessary. Mrs. Suhler make a motion to go to quarterly business meetings that will be combined with other events such as Family Math Night, RIF Night, etc. Andy Addis seconded the motion. It passed with unanimous vote.
Dillons Fun Run will be held May 5. After some discussion it was decided that Ms. Neighbors will be the ‘Chicken’ for the assembly on Friday. Mrs. Theissen asked if there was any way that PTO could provide transportation for those students who would like to attend but didn’t have a ride. There was no resolution to this inquiry.
Erin McFarland announced that the individual Spring pictures are in the office. April 25 from 3:00 – 7:00pm will be the time for parents to view and pay for the pictures. They will be available in the office until then as well.
Erin McFarland announced that the 6th grade recognition cakes have been ordered for the May 22 celebration. Volunteers are needed to assist in that event. There was some discussion concerning what, if anything, to give to the graduates from PTO. After some brainstorming, Kristy Farley made a motion to give $5 gift cards to Wal-Mart to all the graduates. Mrs. Theissen seconded, the motion carried.
Andy Addis asked if it is possible to close off or at least gate the East entrance to the playground. Ms. Neighbors said she would ask maintenance about it since it is a public alley way.
Andy Addis asked if there is something PTO can do to help the teachers in the classrooms using the money that has been raised. Mrs. Theissen asked if money could be designated for field trips. The cost has gone up so much since the decision was made that buses must be used in transporting students. After much discussion the issued was tabled until next meeting.
Old Business:
Andy Addis did the research on the pencil sharpeners needed for the classrooms as discussed in a previous meeting. It was decided to that PTO will purchase one industrial pencil sharpener to test and see if it is worth the money.
Principal’s Report:
Ms. Neighbors handed out charts explaining the preliminary results of the math and reading tests. There were marked improvements. Pilot testing for the state will begin Monday, April 16. Official test results will be available soon.
Ms. Neighbors would like to install a “lock down” system and asked the PTO for $1800 to do so. This system would require that anyone who would like to enter the building would have to be ‘buzzed in’ in order to enter. Andy Addis made the motion that PTO give the money to go to the security system. Mrs. Graves seconded. The motion carried.
Mrs. Farley made a motion to adjourn, seconded by Ms. Shea. Erin McFarland adjourned the meeting.
These are the minutes as recorded and respectfully submitted by Kathy Addis.
Faris PTO Meeting
January 11, 2007
Erin McFarland called the meeting to order.
There were no minutes for December due to no meeting in December.
Treasurer’s Report:
There was no treasurer’s report due to the absence of the treasurer.
Fundraiser Report:
Erin McFarland reported the money collected for December from Papa John’s was $110. For January the donation was $100. Mrs. Manny’s class won the pizza party. Although a definite amount was not available, Erin reported that the profits made from the School Mate Fundraiser were more than $4,000. She also stated that $391.84 was raised through the Santa Secret Shop. This was more than in the past possibly due to having more products than in the past. A comment was made that it would be helpful to have more time for the younger students in the future to ‘shop’. A suggestion was made to possibly separate the products so that not everything is put out each day, but divide it between the two days of selling. No definite decision was made.
T-shirt orders will be going in sometime this Spring, possibly in March. There will be some changes on the form due to lack of stock within the company.
Erin asked for ideas for the Spring fundraiser, they are as follows:
Gold Canyon Candles
Korb Kandles
Pampered Chef
Dominos Pizza Gift Cards
Home-made enchiladas
Little Ole Cookie House
Red Wheel
A school carnival
Roxanna Cox volunteered to chair the fundraiser if Little Ole Cookie House was chosen. After much discussion, Kathy Addis made a motion to accept Little Ole Cookie House as the Spring fundraiser. Roxanna Cox seconded, the motion carried.
It was decided that the fundraiser will begin March 1 and the orders will be collected on March 21, with an assembly to kick it off on February 28.
New Business:
Mrs. Suhler and Mrs. Warren sought approval and funding for a promotional idea to encourage parents to assist their children in their education. It is an opportunity to recognize the parents who put forth a concerted effort to help their students succeed. The parent(s) would be nominated and voted on by the faculty. This recognition would take place during the Celebration of Learning Assembly. The family would be given a $25 gift certificate to Papa John’s Pizza. Andy Addis volunteered to write a press release to give to the newspaper in order to get the community involved and to better allow all the Faris families to know about the incentive. Josie Thompson made a motion to accept the “Family Recognition”, Mrs. Suhler seconded, the motion carried.
Erin McFarland mentioned that the February PTO meeting is scheduled for February 8th which is the same night was the 4th through 6th grade music program. She mentioned that Ms. Neighbors suggested making it on “Family Math Night” on February 15. It was agreed by all that this would work better. Since the March PTO meeting is scheduled for the same time as Parent/Teacher Conferences, it was agreed that there will be no March PTO meeting.
Mrs. Suhler petitioned the PTO to fund her class to go on a field trip to the Museum of World Treasures. There will be approximately 22 students attending. She mentioned that Ms. Neighbors volunteered to provide the transportation. Andy Addis made a motion to have PTO pay up to $10 per student for admission to the museum. Josie Thompson seconded, the motion passed.
A discussion began concerning the needs of the teachers that PTO could possibly provide. Three things that were mentioned were industrial pencil sharpeners in each classroom, an ‘elmo’, and some money for incentives/promotions for the safety patrol. Andy Addis made a motion that $100 per year be given to the safety patrol to provide hot chocolate, parties for participants, etc. Kathy Addis seconded, the motion carried.
Andy Addis asked permission to ask Wal Mart about a matching grant for the upcoming fundraiser. All agreed this was a good idea.
Meeting adjourned. These are the notes as taken and respectfully submitted by Kathy Addis.

Old Business:
Umbrellas and tables purchased with the Lowe’s grant money have been installed and are currently being utilized by student and faculty.
An opportunity to take advantage of an ‘early-bird’ special with the company that produces the DVD yearbook has arisen. If accepted, Faris will receive 10 free DVDs for every 100 ordered and it required a 50% deposit to be made no later than November 10. Faris PTO Meeting
September 13, 2006
Erin McFarland called the meeting to order.
Shannon Stewart made motion to accept the minutes from last month as
written. Josie Thompson seconded, the motion carried.
There was a brief introduction of everyone present.
Treasurer’s Report:
Shannon Stewart reported there is $9,649.31 in the PTO checking account.
This includes the $5000.00 from the Lowe’s Toolbox for Education Grant.
She also reported that due to communication errors and a delay with the
manufacturer the materials and equipment needed for the “Courtyard
Renovations” project have not yet arrived. When they do, the $5000.00
will be deducted. Some of the materials could be here within a week or
two.
Fundraising Report:
Erin McFarland reported that $300.00 was made from the Papa John’s
monthly fundraiser over the summer and we made $160.00 in September,
thus we will be receiving a check for $460.00 from Papa John’s. Mrs.
Theissen’s class won the pizza party for the month of September.
She also stated that a volunteer to chair the Fundraiser Committee is
much needed.
It was also reported that during the Open House it was voted to use the
Higher Profits Fundraising ‘School Mate’ organization for this fall’s
fundraiser. This includes but is not limited to cookbooks, scrap booking
materials, stationary and journals. PTO will make 50% of what is sold.
The fundraiser will begin October 16, 2006 and go until October 31,
2006. The prizes that the students can earn are based on the number of
items sold rather than the dollar amount sold as it has been in the
past. The money is to be collected when the order is made.
Mrs. McFarland also reported that Santa’s Secret Shop is scheduled for
December 1st and 2nd. Volunteers are needed to set up and help students
during the Shop. A suggestion was made to put a limit on the amount of
money any one student can spend at the Shop. The matter was tabled for a
future meeting.
Old Business:
It was unanimously decided that PTO would sponsor the Teacher’s Wish
List again this year. Each teacher will receive $100.00 to purchase
items they deem necessary.
Shannon Stewart reported that the first teacher’s appreciation
disbursement was a set of grading stamps from the Books are Fun
organization. Mrs. Yoder stated that they are great and that the
students really like them.
Principal’s Report:
Ms. Neighbors reported on the Bond Issue. According to district and city
statistics, it will require 100% of Hutchinson voters to vote yes on the
Bond issue in order for it to pass.
Ms. Neighbors also presented slides demonstrating the results of the AYP
(Adequate Yearly Progress) report for State Math and Reading. According
to the results, 100% of our students are proficient in math, thus we
made AYP as a school.
As a school Faris also made AYP in reading with 83.4% of our students
being proficient in reading; however, as a district Hutchinson 308 did
not make AYP. It has not yet been determined if we made ‘Exemplary
Standard of Excellence’ because the formulas used have not yet been
calculated.
Graphs and charts were presented to show how Faris compares to other
schools in the district as well as State averages in reading and math.
Ms. Neighbors commented that Faris students have made great strides in
theses areas, but more work is needed, especially in the basics of math.
Andy Addis asked if there are any resources available that PTO could
purchase in order to aide students in helping improve their math skills.
Ms. Neighbors responded that repetition of the foundational math skills
at home is what is required. She also stated that Faris does use the
‘Everyday Calendar Math’ system and that seems to help. Mrs. Yoder
agreed. However, Ms. Neighbors was not aware of any software that would
be advantageous at this time. Andy Addis suggested that we develop a
competitive way of instilling the basic math skills in our students,
something similar to a “math-bee” or the like. PTO could provide the
motivation if the teachers could provide the tools. Ms. Neighbors said
she would discuss the issue with the School Improvement Team and the
faculty as well as poll the students to determine what would motivate
them. She also mentioned that volunteers are needed to come and read
with the students during school hours as well as help with developing
math skills.
She reminded those present that the district has adopted ‘web-based AR’
(Accelerated Reading) thus making it possible and much easier for
students to access the tests required for AR at home or elsewhere. The
school AR goal for this year is 14,000 points. The students achieved
11,000 points last year. If the AR goal is reached, the entire school
will take a field trip to the Saline Wildlife Park at the end of the
school year.
Ms. Neighbors also reported that Faris is 1 of only 2 schools in the
district that is utilizing the District 308 website on a regular basis.
That is, we are updating and posting as issues and the need arises.
There will soon be significant changes in the district website.
Ms. Neighbors stated that as part of the Baldridge Process, student must
do a social responsibility / community service project. She mentioned
that she would like to possibly do a stained class project with the four
window panels that face the courtyard. This issue was tabled.
Ms. Neighbors ended her report by thanking PTO for all they have raised
for the school and look forward to another great year.
New Business:
Erin McFarland mentioned that we will need to begin thinking about what
PTO would like to do for a spring fundraiser. The issue was tabled.
The issue of the DVD Yearbooks was raised. Apparently all the students
like the idea. Roxanna Cox made a motion to do the DVD Yearbooks again
this year. Mrs. Yoder seconded the motion. All were in favor, the motion
carried.
The annual “Make a Difference Day” in scheduled in October and will be
tied in with the social responsibility / community service project. It
has yet to be determined what the project will be.

Faris PTO & Open House
August 17, 2006
Ms. Neighbors started the meeting by welcoming all parents and
teachers, introducing new and returning teachers. She then dismissed
them to their classrooms to prepare for the Open House.
Ms. Neighbors also gave several reminders to the parents:
1. Please have the children cross at crosswalks in order to
prevent any accidents.
2. Please stay out of the bus loading zone. There are 3 buses to
pick up children after school including a special one to pick up for the
Boys and Girls Club.
3. Truancy will not be tolerated. She then went on to explain the
details of the process if a child has repeated unexcused absences.
4. If a parent plans to attend lunch with their child, please let
the office know first thing that morning so there will be enough lunches
prepared for all students.
5. Please remember to read to or encourage your student to read
daily. The Faris Team Goal this year is 14,000 AR (Accelerated Reader)
points. If that goal is attained, there will be a trip to Salina to the
zoo and wildlife refuge.
6. Parents are strongly encouraged to join and be involved in the
PTO.
Ms. Neighbors then introduced Erin McFarland, PTO president who
introduced this year’s PTO officers.
Mrs. McFarland stated announced that the new day and time for the PTO
meetings will be on Thursdays at 6:30pm and childcare will be provided
in the library.
Mrs. McFarland also mentioned the attending parents had an opportunity
to vote on the fall fundraiser for PTO. The options were Red Wheel,
PartyTime, a cookbook option and a candle option. The votes will be
tallied and reported on during the September meeting.
Parents at the meeting also had a chance to give input regarding the DVD
yearbook. PTO is selling Faris t-shirts again this year. This is not a
fundraiser, there is no money being made on these sales, it is simply an
opportunity to purchase Faris ‘wear’ provided by the PTO.
Ms. Neighbors concluded the meeting and this aspect of the Open House by
thanking all who attended and reminding parents that she has an ‘open
door’ policy and they are welcome at any time.
Parents were then released to go to their children’s classrooms.
These are the minutes as recorded and respectfully submitted by Kathy
Addis.

which children would qualify for the help. This matter was tabled until
next year.

Mrs. Neighbors reported on the progress of the new Accelerated
Reader Program. She calls it a “success!” The lower grades are catching
on rather quickly though the upper grades are taking a little longer.
Ice cream floats for everyone who meets their goal in January has been
established as an incentive for students to be diligent in their
reading. In order to better help parents understand the new AR system
and where their child should be as a reader, Mrs. Neighbors will include
the AR instructions with the newsletter. This is also intended to help
parents encourage their children to read. Mrs. Neighbors also expressed
a need for 1st grade level books for the library. She will be looking
for grants for next year.
Yearbook Report:
Roxanna Cox reported that the yearbook staff is currently trying to
decide how and where to get the yearbook published. Mrs. Neighbors
presented an option of a Music Video Yearbook. We watched a short
presentation on this idea. After much discussion and several unanswered
questions, it was determined to table this issue until Mrs. Neighbors is
able to speak with the Music Video Yearbook representative and get the
answers the PTO needs. Currently the options for yearbook publishing are
through LifeTouch, Office Max, or Music Video Yearbook. Time, money and
the availability to all students are the major concerns. It was
discussed that there are some students who are financially unable to
purchase a yearbook. Andy Addis made a motion that PTO pay a maximum of
$10.00 (depending on the actual cost to the student) for each yearbook
per family. Thus, if the yearbook cost the student’s family $9.00, they
would pay nothing unless they want additional books, at which they would
be responsible for the entire cost of the additional books. Roxanna Cox
seconded the motion.
NOTE:
The Yearbook staff is needing any pictures from previous school
functions, ie. Read-N-Feed, the 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade musical, etc. If
you have available pictures, please contact the school office.
These are the minutes as taken and respectfully submitted by Kathy
Addis.
