WELCOME
Welcome to Hutchinson Middle School. We are glad that you are here and we look forward to working with you to make this a great year.
We hope that with clear expectations, a strong instructional program, and the cooperation of you and your family, the year will be outstanding. We are proud of you and of the talents you bring to our school. We hope that you will work hard to utilize your talents in the best way possible.
This handbook will provide you and your parents or guardians helpful information about Hutchinson Middle School including policies and regulations. All guidelines are designed to maintain an orderly school where learning can take place and individual creativity can be encouraged. Some guidelines may be revised as the school year advances.
Please read the handbook thoroughly because you are responsible for the information included in it. Feel free to contact the school office (665-4800 [7] or 665-4700 [8] ) for additional information.

CONTACTING TEACHERS:
We encourage communication with the teachers. However, it is important that teachers not be interrupted during class. If you need to contact a teacher by telephone please call. If they are in class, we will take a message and ask the teacher to return your call. Teachers may also be contacted via e-mail. Send email to the teacher's last name, first initial @usd308.com. Example: ellegoodm@usd308.com

ATTENDANCE POLICY
You benefit most when you attend school each day. The only excused absences are those resulting from personal illness, medical/dental appointments, court appearances, death in the immediate family, and official school-related activities which have prior administrative approval. All other absences are considered unexcused. Three or more absences in a row will require a doctor’s note for the absences to be considered excused.

WHEN YOU ARE ABSENT your parent must call the school on the day of the absence or send a note the day you return.

WHEN RETURNING TO SCHOOL AFTER AN ABSENCE
1. If the school was not notified by telephone on the day of the absence please bring a dated, signed note from
your parent(s) stating the reason for the absence. Otherwise the absence will be considered unexcused.
2. Take the note to the student window in the office when the first bell rings.
3. YOU are responsible for obtaining and completing make-up assignments for all classes. You will have two (2)
days for every day absent to complete make-up assignments.

IF YOU NEED TO LEAVE SCHOOL DURING THE DAY
1. Bring a signed, written excuse from home or have a parent phone the school.
2. Submit the note to the student window in the office before school.
3. Receive a pink slip from the office.
4. Sign out in the office immediately before leaving.
5. Report to the window in the office to sign in and get a pink slip when returning to the school.

TRUANCIES (K.S.A. 72-1112)
Truancies are reported to the County Attorneys Office when three (3) consecutive or five (5) non-consecutive UNEXCUSED ABSENCES occur in a trimester. Absences of more than ten (10) days per trimester which occur for any reason, excessive tardies, skipped detentions, and skipped classes can be considered unexcused absences. We want you in school. It's your job as a student to be there.

BE ON TIME
You are responsible for being on time to school or classes. If you are not in your seat when the bell rings you are tardy. If you arrive late, go to the office for a pink slip. If you know that you are running late, have your parent call or send a note of explanation. ON THE 4TH AND EACH SUBSEQUENT UNEXCUSED TARDY TO SCHOOL, YOU ARE ASSIGNED A 30 MINUTE DETENTION FROM YOUR HOME ROOM TEACHER. Detentions take precedence over all activities (including athletic practices). After the 8th and subsequent tardy you will be assigned an office referral. Tardies to class are subject to that teacher's rules.
ANY TIME YOU ARRIVE AFTER 8:05 am YOU ARE TARDY AND YOU MUST CHECK IN AT THE OFFICE.

BUS RULES AND REGULATIONS
1. Students shall obey the driver at all times.
2. Students shall be on time.
3. Students shall stand behind the curb away from the roadway while waiting for the bus.
4. Students shall not smoke, eat or bring animals or glass containers onto the bus.
5. Students shall talk with the driver only when necessary.
6. Students shall respect the rights and property of others.
7. Students shall speak with a quiet voice.

MAKE UP WORK
YOU MUST MAKE UP ALL REQUIRED WORK UPON RETURNING TO SCHOOL FOLLOWING ANY ABSENCE WITHIN THE TIME LIMITS DESIGNATED BY SCHOOL STAFF. Students will have a minimum of two days per day of absence to get work turned in. It is YOUR responsibility to obtain, complete and hand in all make up work. To obtain work for the days that your student is ill, please call in by 12:00 so that we can have it ready by 3:16. Schoolwork and/or tests previously assigned and due on the date of an absence are due on the day of return. Tests, lab work, etc. may have to be completed after school.

LATE WORK POLICY
To receive full credit for assignments, you must have your assignment IN THE CLASSROOM and handed in AT THE TIME DESIGNATED by the teacher.

HALL PASSES
1. Your planner has a Hall Pass page to use.
2. At all times, when leaving the classroom, you must have the teacher initial your planner showing your
right to be out of class, and the time you left marked.
3. Go directly to the destination marked.
4. When leaving your destination, the time must be marked on the pass, with the initials of the staff
person that you saw. Go directly back to class.
5. When you return to class, your teacher must see your planner to approve that you followed these
procedures.

TEXTBOOKS AND EQUIPMENT
The school district provides textbooks for students through "usage fees". Student fees pay for use of a variety of books and do NOT necessarily mean a single book will be issued to a student for his/her exclusive use for the year.
Students should remember they are responsible for each book they use. If texts are lost or unreasonably damaged, students are required to pay for them. Loaning your texts to another student does not alter your responsibility for texts checked out to you nor does a claim that a textbook was stolen.
Any equipment damaged by students because of carelessness must be repaired or replaced at the student's expense. Teachers report lost and damaged books and equipment to the office. Billing for such items is handled in the office.

ACADEMIC PROGRESS
Parents are encouraged to access current grade and attendance information for their student on Power school. This can be done as often as a parent wishes.

PROGRESS REPORTS
Halfway between each grading period, you will take to your parents or guardian a mid-term progress report. This is the only formal grade notice the teachers will provide prior to the end of the trimester. You should keep a record of daily grades in your AGENDA so you and your parent or guardian can monitor your progress. Parents/guardians please contact teachers anytime throughout the school year if you have questions or concerns. Updates can be seen on Power School, grades will be entered as soon as possible after assignments are turned in.

REPORT CARDS
Your parents or guardians will receive three grade reports during the year or once every trimester. You do not have to have your parents sign them or return them to school. Should you lose the reports (trimester grades) the office will have a record of your grades.

PARENT-TEACHER CONFERENCES
We encourage parent-teacher conferences through out the year. Teachers are available for conference during the day or after school. Please call the office for an appointment with teachers so that conflicts with their classroom duties can be avoided. Formal parent-teacher conferences will also be scheduled three times a year.

POWER SCHOOL
Each student at HMS has been issued a user name and password that will allow parents to gain information related to their student's progress and attendance. Information regarding this program will be made available at enrollment each year and at parent-teacher conferences. Parents may contact the school with questions about Power School.

GRADES
We expect each student to achieve and progress. Students will be presented a variety of learning experiences and assignments. Each student is responsible for completing and handing in every assignment on time. Every teacher will explain the grading system used in their classes. Students can make appointments with teachers after school if extra help is needed.

GRADING SCALE
The following scale is district wide and will be used in all classes.
A = 100-92 Excellent
B = 91-83 Good
C = 82-74 Average
D = 73-65 Poor
F = 64 or less Failure

Homework Club
Goal:
Our goal for this program is to lower the number of students earning a failing grade.

Program:
-F reports will be run every Friday morning starting with the second Friday of each tri-mester.
-All students earning a failing grade in any class will have three days of Homework Club the following week.
-The three days are mandatory and if students choose not to serve them then the same rules for truancy will be applied.
-The only reason for missing are for excused absences and those days will need to be made up ASAP.
-We will run Homework Club Monday thru Wednesday after school from 3:20-4:00.
-Students will meet in designated rooms where their pod teachers or elective teachers will work with them at Homework Club.
-Students having an excused absence can attend on Thursday in the morning from 7:15-8:00 to make up one day they have missed.
-There will be a shuttle bus running after Homework Club from both buildings to the other one Monday thru Wednesday; this shuttle will also go by various practice facilities.
-Students will have the opportunity to make up any homework assignment that they did poorly on or that they didn’t do from the week before only.

-Assignments that they did poorly on can be made up to a C- (74%) if made up to the teacher’s satisfaction.
-Assignments that students didn’t do or turn in can be made up to a D- (65%) if made up to the teacher’s satisfaction.
-After the one week those assignments cannot be made up for credit.
-Students will also have the opportunity to work on any current assignments for the current week.
-Other students can attend and work on poor, missing, or current assignments as well for the same minimum credit.
-All make up assignments are due by 4:00 on Wednesday.
-We will start the process over weekly.

Teachers:

-Teams will put a note in the student’s planner about the Homework Club.
-Teams will also mail a post card home about the Homework club if no parent contact has been made.
-On Monday during team time teachers will put homework packets together for each student that is attending Homework Club.
-Other students attending that are not required to attend will need to request a homework packet.
-The new Homework procedure is subject to change as needed by administrative discretion.

.
TIPS FOR PARENTS
When you have questions about something that is happening in your child's class you need to call the teacher. He or she will appreciate you contacting them first. The teacher is most knowledgeable person to talk to when you have question about class expectations and subject matter. Students do not always perceive incidents in the same way an adult does. Getting information from the teacher may help you understand more fully what is happening in school.
If you still have questions after speaking with the classroom teacher, then please contact the counselor or administrators for additional help.
If your child has struggled with school subjects in the past, please set regular dates to call to check on your child's progress. Each teacher has an instruction load of over one hundred students that they are responsible for teaching. Calling individual students is not always possible. If you want more than mid-term and trimester grades please call individual teachers to ask how your child is doing. Please don't wait for the teacher to call you.

RECOGNITION
Pride in his or her progress is a reward each student has the opportunity to attain. In addition to this pride, the following awards, among others, may be presented at awards assemblies throughout the year.

HONOR ROLL:
Principal's Honor Roll -- Student has earned a 4.0 GPA
Honor Roll -- Student has earned a 3.5 to 3.99 GPA
Honorable Mention -- Student has earned a 3.0 to 3.49 GPA
An incomplete in any subject will keep a student off the honor roll

DEPARTMENTAL ACADEMIC AWARDS: (such as) Spelling, Math, English, Vocal Music, Instrumental Music, etc.

SPECIAL RECOGNITION AWARDS: Awards that may be given in recognition of special/outstanding accomplishments.

ATHLETICS: Cross Country, Soccer, Volleyball, Football, Basketball, Wrestling, Track, Tennis, Three Sports, and Cheerleaders.

ATTENDANCE: Perfect Attendance for the year.

HAWK AWARD: An award presented annually to students who have exemplified responsible behavior and outstanding interpersonal relationship skills - kind, thoughtful, supportive and congenial to peers and adults. Teachers nominate these students.

COUNSELOR
HMS has a counselor on staff to talk with you during the school day. In the past, students have used the counselor to help with schoolwork, conflict resolution, working through grief, intervening in misunderstandings with parent or teachers and other personal issues. If a student would like to schedule a time with the counselor, leave a note in the office. The note should contain the student's name and the time the student is available to meet.

SCHEDULE CHANGES
Schedule changes cannot be made easily. Every attempt was made to schedule students in classes they most want to take. All changes must be made in the first week with principal approval. The same policy applies for the second and third trimester.
If there is an educational or physical need for a change, a meeting with parents and student(s), principals, teachers and counselor can be set to discuss the need and determine if a schedule change is to be made. If a mistake has been made and a child has not been placed as determined by a previous meeting, please contact the counselor at once so the corrections can be made.

S.R.O. (School Resource Officer)

The goal of the SRO program is to bridge the gap between students and law enforcement.

The SRO plays three different roles in the school.
1. Teacher - The SRO teaches several different subjects to students in a classroom environment.
2. Counselor - The SRO is used as a resource for students, teachers, parents and administrators.
3. Police Officer - The SRO takes care of any violation of the criminal code (Federal, State or local) on or off campus.

K-9 UNITS
Periodically, K-9 Units will be at HMS to help maintain a safe and orderly learning environment. This will serve as a prior notice that these activities will occur during the school year.

NURSE
Health services are available for you only part-time. If you become ill or injured during the school day, get a pass from your teacher and report immediately to the school office. NO STUDENT IS TO LEAVE THE SCHOOL BUILDING PRIOR TO PARENT NOTIFICATION AND SIGN-OUT BY SCHOOL PERSONNEL.

MEDICATION
If you must take medication during the school day, your parent must fill out a Form 709 that gives permission to the school to dispense the medication. THE NURSE OR OTHER DESIGNATED PERSONNEL MUST DISPENSE ANY MEDICINE BROUGHT TO SCHOOL FROM THE OFFICE. Medication is to be brought in the original container, appropriately labeled stating the name of the student, name of the medication, dosage and time it is to be taken. This includes aspirin, Tylenol, etc. DO NOT KEEP MEDICATION OF ANY KIND IN YOUR LOCKER.

SCHOOL BREAKFASTS & LUNCHES
Cafeteria policy will be individualized for each building.

DIFFERENT EMERGENCIES REQUIRE DIFFERENT DRILLS. PLEASE BE QUIET AND LISTEN TO INSTRUCTIONS. YOUR LIFE OR SOMEONE ELSES MAY DEPEND ON IT.

ELEVATORS
Elevators are provided for handicapped and staff use. Students are asked to use the stairs. If you are injured, a doctor's note or a permit from the nurse is required to obtain an elevator key.
THE KEY MUST BE RETURNED TO THE OFFICE AT THE END OF THE DAY. THE COST OF A LOST KEY IS $1.00.

You will NOT be called out of class to receive telephone calls. Emergency phone messages will be delivered to you. Office telephones are not available for student use unless it is a school-related manner. Pod phones are not for student use. Cell phones are to be kept in your locker and turned off or they will be confiscated.

BICYCLES / SKATEBOARDS
Bicycles are welcome at HMS if you walk your bike on school property and lock it up while you are in school. BE SURE TO WALK YOUR BICYCLES ON SCHOOL PROPERTY.

You are also then expected to either get a ride or to take the shuttle to practice daily and to get there as soon as possible. It is up to the coach’s discretion on the make-up activities for practice and the amount of playing time for failing and having to attend Homework Club.
Ineligible students may not accompany a team or a sponsor on a school trip and may not perform or wear a school uniform during the period of ineligibility. You will not be allowed to continue practicing during the period of ineligibility.

LOITERING
We welcome persons to HMS who are giving you a ride home. However, please have your driver stay in the car or report to the office to pick you up. Your safety is our number one concern!

GANG POLICY
Any gang sign, symbols or graffiti on you or your school work, books, notebook, planner, etc. is considered unruly conduct that disrupts school and will be dealt with as such. Students may be required to replace textbooks, notebooks, planners, etc. that are ruined by graffiti. Students who confirm gang membership to school administrators waive their rights to equal treatment as gang activity is criminal activity and disruptive to the school process.

SEXUAL HARASSMENT

Any contraband will be seized by school administration and held for any length of time deemed necessary. When the situation merits the need for law enforcement assistance, our School Resource Officer will be asked to assist with searches.
With reasonable suspicion School Administration may act without notifying parents. Parents will be notified within a reasonable amount of time about situations in which the aid of the parent would be useful in protecting the child such as a sudden absence from school. Contacting a parent to report a situation regarding their child is not an invasion of that student's privacy.

CRISIS MANAGEMENT
USD 308 has a crisis management plan that has been developed in cooperation with local agencies. The plan includes strategies to deal with most foreseeable emergencies, establishes a chain of command, and sets evacuation sights with the protection and safety of students as a priority.

GUIDELINES FOR DISCIPLINE
Hutchinson Middle School will use a point system to track individual students' disciplinary records. We have developed a point rating for each of the identified violations. Points may be assigned on each violation along with specific consequences such as Detentions, In-School Suspension (ISS), Out-of-School Suspension (OSS), and Long-Tem Suspension. Penalties/Points may vary depending on severity of incident and number of occurrences. Building administrators reserve the right to modify and/or assign penalties/points as they deem necessary.
