The HMS 7 library and Youth Friends are sponsoring our first Book Club. They meet every 2nd Friday at 7:30 in the Library. There are twelve members and they are reading “Cruise Control” and “Stuck in Neutral” by Terry Trueman. This is an exciting opportunity to keep kids interested in reading. At our next meeting, students will lead the “book talks”.

As teachers, we are always looking for new and fun ways to encourage our kids to read. In this month’s “Hawk Talk”, we are offering ideas for parents that will help their children with technical reading. They are:

1. Have them cook by following recipes.
2. Build models together but have the kids read the instructions.
3. Work on cars together following the manufacture’s information.
4. Work on crafts that have steps like origami/knitting/ or building furniture.
5. Encourage scouts/4 H etc. as these groups create using technical reading .

Finally, the HMS 7 Library has been busy working with the Kansas history and geography teachers giving walking tours of downtown Hutchinson, helping students write about being a mayor, telling Kansas stories, sharing slide shows of Kansas, using Kansas maps to highlight personal travels, and studying the three branches of government.
