HMS Team A

Tis the season of turkey, dressing, and standardized testing! A-Pod math students are preparing for the tests that consume the time between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Cramming all the necessary information in is very time consuming so, if your student is working on slope one day and then finding solutions for a line the next, this is normal. Just be helpful and supportive and encourage the students to use the information/notes they have been given in class to solve the problems. Also, make sure they get enough sleep, they will need it.

Mrs. Aumiller's class will be covering a chapter on Manifest Destiny.  We will discuss America's westward movement to areas like Oregon Country, the battle for Texas independence, New Mexico, California and the war with Mexico, and Utah.  Students will be learning about the Oregon Trail, the battle at the Alamo, the gold rush, and the Mormon Trail and how these events shaped the United States physically economically, and culturally.

In Science, students are going to finish up with the Physical Science part of the year by covering chemical reactions and compounds.  Then, they’ll dive into the Life Science book and start off with cell structures and functions.  

In English, students will be finishing the novel Whale Talk, by Chris Crutcher . They will learn how to respond to literature and how to discuss information they’ve read, in written form by working on a character analysis and a “How to answer and essay question” unit.. In addition, students will be working on mini-research projects from now until Christmas Break.

Finally, in Reading, students are focusing on the Diary of Anne Frank and studying the Holocaust. There are also working on preparing for their state assessment test by focusing on prefixes and suffixes each week. Parents should see lists come home and students should be studying.
